Suction cup dentures

Suction cup dentures – a new option for denture wearers

A new type of denture is quickly becoming a highly favoured option for those without natural teeth of their own. This new alternative to traditional dentures is Suction cup dentures. These are a step up from traditional dentures and can be a viable option for those who require a full denture on either their upper or lower arch.

Suction cup dentures can be a non-invasive and cost effective process to improve to fit of new dentures and can be a viable alternative to dental implants.

As with all dental solutions, a clinician would need to assess your oral health to deem whether you would be suitable for this type of appliance.

So what are Suction Cup Dentures?

Suction Cup Dentures effectively “suction” to the mouth to enable a secure fit. The denture is lined with a layer of silicone material which adheres to the oral tissue without irritation.

This layer contains small bumps known as valves which when pressed into place, trap a small amount of moisture and air so that when pressure is relieved, the denture will stay in place. It is the pressure created within the valves that causes the retention of the denture to the mouth.

How do they compare to traditional dentures?

Traditional dentures are fitted to the shape of the mouth by fitting to the natural contouring. This is why impressions are taken so that a denture can be built specifically for you.

However, if you have been without natural teeth for a while, the bone that once supported your natural teeth begins to shrink away. This causes the shape of your mouth to become more flat. In these cases, there is very little for your denture to grip onto which means it can slip or drop out of place. This can leave people needing to use a denture fixative to keep the denture in place.

Suction Cup Dentures are secured by their suction mechanism holding onto the surfaces in the mouth when placed. This removes the need for a fixative and leaves the wearer feeling more confident and comfortable.

Could I be a candidate for Suction Cup Dentures?

This type of denture can only be offered to those who are without natural teeth on either their upper or lower or both arches in the mouth.

Are you already a full traditional denture wearer and unhappy with the fit of your current denture?

Without natural teeth to anchor onto, a traditional denture will often require a fixative to stay secure and comfortable for a long period of time. This is not always the case, but for those who experience this, it can cause a lack of confidence and can be uncomfortable to cope with long term. Suction Cup Dentures put away the need for fixative.

Have you been told that you don’t have enough bone to have implants placed?

Implants rely on their being a sufficient amount of bone within the jaw to be secured into. If the bone has reduced too much, implants are often not a suitable option. Implants may also not be an option if you are unable to have surgery. Suction dentures are none-invasive and are not reliant on bone levels as they secure to the mouth whatever shape it is so this option could be a good alternative.

Do you have delicate oral tissues such as a dry mouth due to medical reasons?

For those with delicate oral tissues such as those who suffer with a dry mouth, you may be unsuitable to receive Suction Cup Dentures. As stated earlier, a clinician will be able to assess your suitability for this type of denture. They will be able to recommend the best solution for you as an individual as there are other alternatives to offer.
